The Matsu Blue Tears Ecology Museum is Matsu’s first highly interactive nature and ecology museum. In addition to static displays about Matsu’s ecology, it also uses 4D surround virtual reality to immerse visitors in the love story of the Moon Princess and the Pirate King, taking them on a journey through the legend of the blue tears.

The Blue Tears Ecology Museum is divided into two sections: the Matsu Ecology Education Hall and the Blue Tears Interactive Hall. The central area of the Ecology Education Hall features a specimen display zone, complemented by text and images around the perimeter, providing a detailed introduction to the ecology of Matsu’s four townships and five islands.

Blue tears are caused by noctiluca scintillans emitting a pale blue fluorescence under the influence of waves and wind.
Blue tears are a phenomenon where ostracods or benthic algae emit a pale blue fluorescence when affected by waves and natural wind. In Matsu’s olden days, they were called “Dingxiang water,” and it was believed that when large numbers of blue tears appeared, schools of Dingxiang fish—which feed on them—would also appear.

Interactive blue tears scenes let visitors immerse themselves in the story of the blue tears.
In the interactive blue tears scenes, visitors can step on the floor, and sensors above project light and shadow of the blue tears. The sparkling waves ripple beautifully, creating a dreamy effect. The experience also incorporates the cultivation technology of noctiluca from National Taiwan Ocean University, allowing visitors to get an up-close look and even touch the blue tears.
