McDonald’s to Stop Providing Plastic Straws: New Cup Lids Allow Drinking Cold Beverages Directly

The red, yellow, and white striped straw has been one of McDonald’s signature features—but you might not see it anymore. On April 11, McDonald’s Taiwan announced that starting from April 12, all McDonald’s locations across Taiwan would gradually implement a “drink cold beverages directly” policy, no longer providing plastic straws. The new cold beverage cup lids will feature a drinking spout, allowing customers to drink directly from the cup. This move aligns with the Environmental Protection Administration’s plastic reduction policy, making McDonald’s Taiwan the world’s first to eliminate plastic straws.

From now on, when you visit McDonald’s, the counter staff will no longer automatically provide straws. However, if customers have special needs, paper straws will be offered instead. Additionally, McDonald’s has chosen Earth Day, April 22, to ban plastic straws at all Taipei branches. All McDonald’s locations across Taiwan will fully phase out plastic straws by the end of June.

Plastic straws are very convenient, but discarding them after one use not only leads to waste but also pollutes the marine environment. As a result, many people are now switching to eco-friendly straws made of stainless steel or glass to reduce environmental harm. After McDonald’s Taiwan stops providing plastic straws, cold drinks will be served with new lids designed for direct sipping. Customers who are used to drinking cold beverages with straws may want to change their habits—or bring their own eco-friendly straws. It’s better for the environment and more hygienic.
