The iconic Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris, France, was ravaged by a massive fire in the early hours of the 16th (Taiwan time). The roaring blaze consumed the cathedral's spire, filling the sky with thick smoke, while the roof between the two bell towers nearly collapsed.

This morning, a devastating fire broke out at Notre-Dame Cathedral, with plumes of smoke billowing from the scene. The highly symbolic spire was also burnt and collapsed. Thanks to the efforts of Parisian firefighters, the flames have now been brought under control, but the 850-year-old beautiful church has suffered severe damage.

According to preliminary investigations, local prosecutors believe the fire was accidental and have ruled out arson or terrorism. The initial assessment points to the ongoing renovation works as the likely cause. Local police will investigate the incident as negligent damage.

French President Emmanuel Macron also pledged to launch a joint domestic and international fundraising campaign to gather funds for the future reconstruction. François-Henri Pinault, Chairman and CEO of Kering Group — which owns luxury brands such as Gucci, YSL, and Balenciaga — also issued a statement pledging to donate 100 million euros to aid the reconstruction of Notre-Dame Cathedral.
