The first Aquarid meteor shower of the summer has arrived tonight – up to 50 stars streaking across the sky per hour, an absolutely spectacular sight!

According to the Central Weather Bureau, the Aquarid meteor shower occurs annually from mid-April to the end of May. This year, the peak falls on May 6, when nearly 50 meteors per hour can be expected – a truly spectacular display.

The Aquarids are caused by dust particles left behind by Halley’s Comet as they enter Earth's atmosphere and burn up, creating shooting stars. At its peak, around 50 meteors per hour are expected, making it a medium-scale meteor shower.

Taipei Astronomical Museum reports that after 9 PM on May 6, travelers can enjoy this first spectacular Aquarid meteor shower of the summer, as long as they’re in a location across Taiwan with no light pollution and clear skies.
