Mae Hong Son Province is located in the northwest of Chiang Mai, bordering Myanmar. The cool months from November to January are the best time to visit Mae Hong Son. Many people make a side trip here from Chiang Mai. Daily flights and bus services are available from Chiang Mai, or you can rent a car or motorcycle to explore the popular Mae Hong Son Loop route.

The Mae Hong Son Loop is a roughly 600-kilometer journey that starts and ends in Chiang Mai and can be completed in three to four days. Passing through picturesque countryside, the loop takes you from Thailand’s highest mountain, Doi Inthanon, to riverside towns such as Mae Chaem and Mae Sariang, the market town of Khun Yuam, and the laid-back town of Pai.

The somewhat remote Shan town — Pai, situated along the banks of the Pai River, is known for its leisurely pace, fun, and relaxing charm, often compared to Bangkok’s backpacker haven, Khao San Road. Here you’ll find homestays, more upscale hotels, restaurants, coffee shops, handicraft stores, bars, and a variety of activities for enjoyment, such as rafting, rubber boat drifting, hiking, cycling, and hot springs.

When visiting the attractions around Pai, don’t miss the Memorial Bridge spanning the Pai River, located about 9 kilometers from the city center near the Pai River Canyon. Built by the Japanese during World War II, it’s a popular photo spot for many Thai visitors. On the other side, the eroded red sandstone area features gullies and ochre-red ridges dotted with pine trees. Aside from the main viewing area, nearby trails lead to the canyon and surrounding woodlands — perfect for bird-watching.
