The beauty of travel is built upon travelers possessing basic morals and etiquette. Before enjoying new experiences abroad, cultivate these seven behaviors to become a responsible traveler.

1.Reduce Pollution

Travel means stepping out of your own life and into someone else’s—to see how others live. That said, just as we wouldn’t litter in our own home, we shouldn’t do it in someone else’s either. Environmental awareness is growing in our daily lives, from waste sorting and reducing plastic use to using various eco-friendly utensils. So when we travel, we should be even less inclined to seek temporary convenience at the cost of polluting or burdening others’ land.

Sometimes, the moment we escape from our regular routines, we switch into vacation mode—thinking nothing matters and nothing is worth caring about. But that’s actually a very wrong attitude. While it’s okay to mentally relax and go with the flow, there are fundamental moral standards you should never abandon. There’s only one Earth, and it’s everyone’s shared responsibility to protect and care for it.

2.No Destruction

Travel often involves visiting famous landmarks and historic sites around the world. These spectacular historical ruins, natural environments, and cultural heritage sites are invaluable treasures for all humankind. Not only should we avoid any potentially harmful behavior, but we should also actively work to protect, conserve, and preserve them, so more people can appreciate these priceless wonders.

Whether you’re a traveler or a local resident, we should all have the courage to educate others about improper behavior. Tourists touching famous paintings, visitors picking up starfish, travelers stealing stones or wood—if you witness such actions, you should speak up and let the person know it’s wrong. This prevents the broken windows effect, minimizes harm to these treasures, and fosters better moral awareness among everyone.

3.Respect Local Culture

Every country and region has its own culture and etiquette. Various rules and customs are something travelers must respect and follow. For example, in France, cutting the lettuce in a salad with a knife and fork may offend the chef; in the United States, tipping service staff is expected; in Japan, mobile phones should be set to silent on public transport; in Bulgaria, nodding means “no” while shaking your head means “yes.” These are all examples of cultural differences.

When you’re on someone else’s land, you should respect their culture. So before traveling, it’s best to do a bit of homework and at least learn about the local customs and way of life. That way, you won’t unintentionally offend anyone or cause unnecessary misunderstandings or conflicts. In short, adapting to local customs is an essential skill for any traveler.

4.Stay Alert

There are over 200 countries in the world, and not all of them have the same level of safety as Taiwan. Some countries are even plagued by ongoing conflict. Popular tourist destinations in Southern Europe like France and Italy, due to the large number of visitors, also attract many thieves. So travelers need to be extra cautious about where they place valuables. When traveling alone, never let your belongings out of your sight, and avoid carrying too much cash to prevent unfortunate incidents.

So travelers should develop a basic sense of alertness. You shouldn’t go looking for trouble, but you must be prepared for it. Stay vigilant throughout your journey, try to avoid entering areas that could pose risks to your safety, and refrain from drinking beverages that have left your sight. A little precaution goes a long way in avoiding harm.
