It’s not only in autumn that you can enjoy the beauty of mountains covered in crimson foliage. On Yilan’s Taiping Mountain, the new purple-red leaves of the Acer pycnanthum burst into bloom, forming vast swaths of red leaf scenery. The picturesque view is incredibly romantic.

Typically, the phenomenon of red foliage occurs mostly in autumn, triggered by changes in sunlight duration and temperature that cause maple leaves to turn red. However, the new leaves of the Acer pycnanthum on Taiping Mountain emerge as a purple-red hue, which gradually deepens into crimson under sunlight. As sunlight exposure increases, the leaves become even more fiery red, creating a red leaf spectacle that can be admired even in summer.

The central staircase of Taiping Mountain National Forest Recreation Area is lined with a large number of Acer pycnanthum trees, forming a romantic “red leaf tunnel.” The best time to admire the Acer pycnanthum spans from when the leaves emerge in spring until the leaf-fall period in September. The fiery red leaves, when illuminated by sunlight streaming through, become even more dazzling.

In addition to taking beautiful photos under the red leaf tunnel, you can also relax at the nearby Cloud Sea Café and enjoy the mountain scenery. Hiking enthusiasts can explore the virgin forest trail to appreciate the beauty of pristine forests and pay homage to the “Zhen’an Temple,” the highest-altitude temple in Yilan County, making it a great one-day trip destination.
