WE Hotel Toya is situated on the shores of Lake Toya in Hokkaido, Japan. The site was formerly a nursing home, but after being designed and supervised by master architect Kengo Kuma, it has been transformed into a nature-inspired boutique hotel with a refined texture, offering travelers a new lodging option around Lake Toya.
The cave-like dining environment also offers sweeping views of Lake Toya.
The design of the hotel is based on Kengo Kuma’s signature style of using natural materials, creating a distinctive and textured accommodation space with cedar wood and linen fabric.

Guests can spot linen fabric in many corners of the hotel. The soft fabric decor creates a unique cave-like feel, and by utilizing the light-transmitting properties of the textile, the lighting is presented in a very comfortable manner.
The public bath also offers views of the lakeside scenery.
The design team has also installed open-air bathtubs in every guest room, allowing travelers who have come all the way to Hokkaido to soak in the tub while enjoying the lakeside view, refreshing both body and mind and washing away fatigue.
The lobby entrance features a design dominated by cedar wood.
