The first day of the seventh lunar month, commonly known as "Ghost Gate Opening," is a month filled with taboos. Many elders remind us to be especially careful when traveling or engaging in leisure activities during this period. Despite this, many travelers still plan trips in the sweltering summer heat. Below is a list of 13 major taboos during Ghost Month that travelers should keep in mind.

1. Ghost Month falls in the peak of summer, and many travelers plan mountain trips to escape the heat. However, the spiritual energy in the mountains is heavier, making it easier to encounter wandering spirits—especially at night, which is best avoided to prevent being haunted or pranked.

2. In Ghost Month, never pat someone on the shoulder or call their name in remote areas, and if someone pats your shoulder or calls your name, don’t turn around. According to tradition, humans have three “fires” located on the crown of the head and both shoulders. Turning around extinguishes these protective flames, making it easier for wandering spirits to take you away.

3. Ghost Month coincides with summer vacation, a popular time for water activities. However, elders often advise avoiding it, as it increases the risk of encountering water ghosts seeking replacements, which can lead to tragic accidents. Regardless, always prioritize your safety when swimming in rivers or at the beach.

4. Avoid taking random photos at night during Ghost Month. After sunset, the spiritual energy rises, and taking photos or videos during this time makes it easier to capture images of wandering spirits. If you do capture one, it could bring bad luck.

5. Avoid singing or whistling at night during Ghost Month. The heavy spiritual energy at night can make wandering spirits think someone is calling them if you make noise. Try not to walk alone at night or make sounds while walking.

6. Also try to avoid taking the last bus during Ghost Month. The hour of Zi (midnight) is when spiritual energy is at its strongest. Using transportation during this time can make it easier for wandering spirits to follow you home.

7. Travelers staying overnight during Ghost Month should take note: when checking into a hotel or homestay, remember to knock first and greet any wandering spirits already in the room. Also, avoid placing your shoes too neatly.

8. Try to avoid walking close to walls during Ghost Month. The older generation often says that walls are yin in nature and cooler, making them a preferred path for wandering spirits. So, during Ghost Month, avoid walking or resting close to walls.
