Traveling with a few friends often comes with all kinds of mishaps and surprises. If you don’t want to be “that” annoying travel companion, take note of these nine common blunders—and don’t repeat them.

1.Forgetting your passport

A passport is an essential document for international travel—without it, you won’t get far. Yet it’s not uncommon to hear horror stories of people arriving at the airport only to realize their passport is still at home. Before you head out, make sure you’ve got your passport with you. Otherwise, you’ll be watching your flight take off without you.

2.Expired passport

Beyond the obvious necessity of carrying a passport, it’s also time-sensitive. Before you leave, in addition to making sure you have it, check its expiry date—it’s crucial. Some countries may deny you entry if your passport doesn’t have enough validity left. Ideally, keep at least six months of validity remaining on your passport.

3.Not bringing your passport

After checking in at the counter, remember to keep your ticket and boarding pass with you at all times. There have been cases where travelers packed their passports in their checked luggage, leading to disaster at customs—the airline staff had to spend time locating the suitcase with the passport. Always keep your passport and boarding pass in your carry-on bag.

4.Wearing the wrong clothes

When flying, opt for light and comfortable clothing. Try to avoid wearing too much jewelry or outerwear and shoes that are difficult to put on and take off—otherwise, you’ll waste a lot of time at security checkpoints. If you’re not in a rush, it just cuts into your rest or shopping time, but if you’re in a hurry, it can be downright infuriating.

5.Overpacking / Overweight luggage

Travelers are often excited to pack before a trip, and sometimes they get lazy with planning and just stuff everything into their suitcase. But when they get to the airport and check in, they find their luggage is overweight. They then frantically try to repack items into their carry-on, opening and closing the bag repeatedly. This not only puts pressure on fellow travelers waiting in line but also increases the chance of forgetting something in the chaos.

6.Making inappropriate jokes

Flight safety has become increasingly strict in recent years. While some customs and security personnel might seem relaxed, don’t test your luck by showing off your sense of humor. Avoid making any jokes about security, luggage, or identity. At security checkpoints, just follow the instructions given—get through as quickly and smoothly as possible.

7.Being late due to traffic

The worst thing when traveling abroad is missing your flight because you’re stuck in traffic. So always allow plenty of time before you leave. If you’re heading to the airport during peak hours, add an extra hour or even an hour and a half to your normal travel time. It’s better to arrive early and stress-free than to risk missing your flight while stuck in traffic.

8.Disruptive behavior

Airports and airplanes are sensitive environments. Speaking out of turn or acting strangely could get you kicked off a flight or detained by customs or security. So besides maintaining proper manners and a good attitude, don’t do anything unreasonable or illegal. Think before you act—don’t let a moment of impulse ruin your entire trip.

9.Negative emotions

Traveling is supposed to be a joyful experience. Don’t let anything ruin your mood, and definitely don’t take your negative feelings out on your travel companions. Approach everything on your journey with a positive mindset—accept, face, and solve problems to create great memories. Spread positive energy to those around you and say goodbye to being “that” annoying travel buddy.
