The world’s largest monolith, Uluru, will be closed to climbers forever — Earth’s navel is now permanently off-limits, meaning travelers can no longer shout their love from the center of the world.

Australia’s most famous World Heritage Site — Uluru — will be closed to tourists. The Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park Board in Australia announced in October 2019 that the climbing trail would be completely shut down, prohibiting visitors from climbing.

Uluru is the spiritual center of the Anangu people, Indigenous Australians of Central Australia. After colonialists seized their land in the late 18th century, even Uluru lost its original name and was renamed Ayers Rock. The influx of mass tourism and the act of climbing Uluru have further desecrated this sacred site in the hearts of the Anangu.

Now, the permanent ban on climbing the Uluru monolith is essentially returning it to the Anangu, allowing their ancestors’ culture to reclaim its tranquility. While climbing the giant Uluru rock will no longer be possible, travelers can still appreciate its beauty through respectful and mindful means. Under the varying angles of sunlight during dawn and dusk, it presents different faces. The serene and beautiful silhouette of Uluru, standing alone under the starry sky in the wilderness, is truly unforgettable.
