Earthquakes have been frequent recently. In addition to the magnitude 6+ quake that was quite memorable in the early hours of the 8th, another magnitude 4.6 earthquake struck Hualien in the early morning of the 16th. On August 17, multiple felt earthquakes occurred in Hualien, including two consecutive ones at 22:52 PM — magnitudes 4.4 and 4.5.

At 12:05 PM on August 18, yet another felt earthquake of magnitude 4.8 struck. The epicenters of these quakes were all located in Shoufeng Township, Hualien, and they were all shallow-focus earthquakes with depths ranging from 5 to 8 kilometers. The shaking intensity in various parts of Hualien reached level 5, while other areas that felt the tremors included central regions between Chiayi and Miaoli, with shaking intensities between levels 1 and 2.

Rainfall across Taiwan.

Regarding the weather, southern Taiwan has seen continuous heavy rain. Starting from the 18th, the northern part has also begun to experience changing weather conditions. The southwestern monsoon and strong convective cloud development are likely to bring short bursts of heavy rainfall, putting the entire island under a heavy rain advisory. The Hengchun Peninsula may see localized torrential rain — stay alert for lightning strikes and strong gusts. Due to days of continuous rain, mountainous areas need to be wary of landslides and falling rocks.

However, the north has seen persistent high temperatures, and even on Sunday, the Taipei Basin remains under an orange alert, with a chance of consecutive days hitting 36°C.

Due to very strong convection, the Central Weather Bureau has also issued thunderstorm warnings for Keelung City, Taipei City, New Taipei City, Taoyuan City, Hsinchu County, and Yilan County.

On the 19th and 20th, under the influence of a low-pressure trough, the southern region will experience brief showers or thunderstorms, while other areas may see localized brief showers or thunderstorms, with some areas at risk of heavier rain.

From the 21st to the 24th, the southern region will have localized brief showers or thunderstorms, while other areas will be mostly cloudy to sunny, with localized brief thunderstorms possible in the afternoon.
