Following the completion and operation of the first phase of the Danhai Light Rail, the Green Mountain Line, at the end of 2018, the second phase of the Danhai Light Rail project is underway, with plans to extend the route to Tamsui Old Street, creating Taiwan’s own tram system!

The second phase of the Danhai Light Rail will add six new stations, allowing transfers from the Tamsui MRT Station to the Tamsui Fisherman’s Wharf Light Rail Station, greatly improving convenience for visitors. Construction is set to begin in 2020 and be completed by 2024.

The light rail plan includes extending into Tamsui Old Street. The design proposes running trains mixed with road vehicles and pedestrians without overhead wires, preserving the historic look of the old street while creating a Japanese-style tram-like experience as another unique attraction in Taiwan.

Both local residents and international travelers are looking forward to the changes the light rail will bring to downtown Tamsui and the old street. The Rapid Transit Bureau has also stated it will incorporate public feedback to continue refining the design.
