Following the Khon masked dance drama, “traditional Thai massage Nuat Thai’” has also become the second element from Thailand to be inscribed on the UNESCO “Intangible Cultural Heritage” list — an ultra-relaxing must-do on any trip to Thailand.

As a non-medical therapy and manipulative treatment (manual therapy), traditional Thai massage Nuat Thai involves body manipulation to help rebalance the patient’s body, energy, and structure, aiming to treat illnesses believed to stem from blocked energy flow along the “sen” lines, which crisscross the human body.

Traditional Thai massage Nuat Thai aims to restore balance to the body’s four elements: earth, water, wind, and fire. To clear blocked energy pathways, therapists use their hands, elbows, knees, and feet in a variety of techniques, combined with herbal compresses to reduce inflammation.

Currently, traditional Thai massage Nuat Thai is divided into two main types: therapeutic traditional Thai massage and wellness-focused traditional Thai massage. Nuat Thai originated from self-care practices among ordinary Thai people in the past, where every village had massage healers whom villagers would turn to for relief from muscle pain caused by fieldwork.

Over time, it developed into a formalized knowledge system. In 1985, the “Revitalization of Thai Massage” project was launched to revive and maximize the knowledge related to Nuat Thai, and a proposal was also initiated to establish a union of traditional Thai massage practitioners.
