Another world-class stunning library +1 — the Knowledge Canyon becomes a new cultural landmark

Taiwan is about to get another world-class, stunningly beautiful library！ The new main branch in Hsinchu City is a collaborative project by the Taiwan-Japan team of Kuo Shu-yuan & Partners Architects and Hiroharu Aida Architects, creating the “Knowledge Canyon” main library that welcomes wind and manipulates light and shadow.

Hsinchu City’s new main library takes “Knowledge Canyon” as its design concept, using two rows of bookshelf walls to form a “Knowledge Canyon.” The spacious corridor between the two walls creates a three-dimensional connection between the city’s green belt and the library.

In response to Hsinchu’s reputation as the “Windy City,” the design allows wind to flow through the Knowledge Canyon, ensuring good indoor ventilation. Skylights bring in natural light to create a bright space, thereby achieving energy-saving and environmentally friendly benefits.

The interior spaces of the library are systematically interconnected, offering functions such as book reading, special collections, audiovisual services, parent-child learning, and art exhibitions. This design meets the needs of users of all ages, and the diverse and multi-functional activity spaces foster a blended and relaxing reading environment.

In addition, the former outdoor parking lot of the performance hall next door has been integrated with the main library, constructing a two-story underground parking complex. The original parking area will be transformed into an outdoor plaza for the main library, becoming a new leisure space for daily cultural exchange.
