Taipei MRT losses exceed NT$1 billion! Travel discounts may be canceled

Taipei MRT has recently been reported to adjust its travel discount policy, aiming to cancel the current 20% discount for passengers using electronic payment cards, including the EasyCard, when riding the metro. The news has sparked online discussions.

Taipei MRT Corporation stated that its core transportation business incurred losses of about NT$1.3 billion last year and is expected to continue losing money this year. Although over 2 million passengers ride daily, the minimum one-way fare is NT$20, and an additional 20% discount is available when using electronic payment cards such as the EasyCard, making it difficult to achieve financial balance.

Taipei MRT said it plans to offer varying discount rates for passengers who travel more often or spend more, similar to the current NT$1,280 monthly pass program, which provides greater benefits to loyal MRT users.

Although Taipei MRT has not yet confirmed the cancellation of the 20% discount for electronic card users, it has indicated that an adjustment plan will be finalized and submitted for government approval by the end of the year. The existing NT$1,280 monthly pass scheme will also be adjusted simultaneously.
