With autumn here, the famous purple flower waterfall pathway at Fashe Riverside Park in Taian District, New Taipei City, has also blossomed, presenting a striking corridor of vibrant purple flowers that captivates many passersby who stop to admire it.

This wall of flowers, formed by clusters of purple garlic vine blooms, symbolizes "mutual longing." The full bloom of pinkish-purple flowers stands out beautifully against the lush greenery. Strolling along the park’s embankment while admiring the flowers adds an elegant and romantic ambiance, with the refined trumpet-shaped blooms gathered into floral clusters.

Garlic vine, also known as purple bell vine or Chang's lagerstroemia, only produces its enchanting purple flowers in autumn and spring. Its flowers symbolize longing, but the blooming period lasts only about a week—very brief—so if you want to take photos or enjoy the view, seize the opportunity.

When the flowers or leaves of the garlic vine are damaged or rubbed, they emit a garlic-like scent, which is how it got its name. Additionally, the flowers change color over time—from initial purple to reddish-purple and then pinkish-purple—so it’s common to see different color gradients on the same plant, making it quite unique.

Garlic vine is often used as an ornamental plant, and many parks plant it. The purple flower corridor at Fashe Riverside Park is especially famous—next time you catch a whiff of garlic in the park, the garlic vine might be nearby!
