When the autumn breeze blows and the weather turns cool, it’s time to warm up your body with nourishing food. Everyone has tried ginger duck, but what about replacing the duck with chicken!? A wildly popular line-up food in Hsinchu – ginger chicken stew – is guaranteed to warm you from head to toe.

The original store of this old-school ginger chicken is located on Youth Street in Hsinchu, and during the autumn season, it’s always bustling with customers. In winter, you’ll really have to patiently queue up to enjoy this heartwarming dish.

In response to diners’ eager requests, the owner opened a flagship store on Bade Road in Hsinchu’s East District, making it easier for everyone to enjoy this unforgettable, dreamy ginger chicken stew.

The broth of Old Shop Ginger Chicken is semi-transparent. The ginger chicken is cooked together with the ingredients selected by diners until they’re half-done before being served. The chicken used in the shop is based on black-bone chicken, which is more nutritious and tender, and is simmered with ginger and various Chinese herbs. The resulting broth is rich and comforting.

A pot of ginger chicken at the shop costs NT$450. Diners can also choose their favorite toppings. Locals suggest having the first round as a hotpot to enjoy the ingredients, and then adding more broth after some time of cooking – the flavor will be even richer. For those who love a bold, gingery and deeply flavorful broth, don’t miss out this winter.
