Kaohsiung’s long-standing local cinema, Sanduo Cinema, is set to close its doors. This theater, which has been in operation for over 40 years, is calling it quits before Kaohsiung hits the big time, citing tough business conditions — leaving many locals who grew up watching movies there feeling sentimental.

Sanduo Digital 3D Cinema began operating in 1978 (the 67th year of the Republic of China) and has been around for over 40 years. It has been a beloved entertainment spot for many locals in Kaohsiung — some have grown up with it, and even their youthful memories are tied to this place, making its closure hard to accept.

The Facebook announcement from Sanduo Cinema also mentioned that due to changes in the broader environment, the diversification of film and entertainment formats, and an oversupplied market leading to difficult operations, they have made the painful decision to close on January 31, 2020 (Year 109 in Taiwan’s calendar).

Sanduo Cinema is not only a repository of youth memories for the people of Kaohsiung but also an important part of the city’s historical legacy. Normal operations will continue until January 31. Those holding group tickets can get refunds at the original point of purchase.
