No need to fly all the way to Hawaii for Jurassic-like movie scenes. This spectacular canyon leads straight to a blue coastline — an Instagram hotspot for amazing photos. A perfect weekend getaway to unwind.

The Jinguashi Geopark is located in Jinguashi, Jiufen, New Taipei. Formerly the Benshan Mine, it was the site of the largest ore body in Jinguashi — the “Main Ore Vein” — and also the main gold and copper deposit in the area’s mining history.

In the past, gold prospectors discovered the small Jinguashi outcrop while panning upstream in Houtong, and the following year found the large Jinguashi gold vein outcrop. With its rocky surface shaped like a melon, it was named “Jinguashi” (Gold Melon Rock), which later became the name of the area.

The ore veins of the Benshan Mine extend from the 600-meter-high peak of the Big Jinguashi down to 130 meters below sea level. The widest part of the ore body reaches up to 100 meters, and the mountain itself has been lowered from around 660 meters above sea level to about 500 meters due to mining.

Since the Benshan Mine used open-pit mining methods, the exposed parts of the ore veins are very clear, making it a living geological classroom. The scenery here is simply magical — a perfect weekend escape from the hustle and bustle. Come to Jinguashi, take in the sea views, and enjoy some peaceful downtime.
