Day 3: 2020/3/25 (Wednesday)

Kagoshima Prefecture is located at the southernmost tip of Kyushu, and hot springs are one of its proudest features. There’s a popular saying in Japan: “Drink at three houses, soak in three baths.” Typically, you soak in a hot spring once before dinner to wash away the day’s fatigue; once after dinner to ensure a good night’s sleep; and once in the morning to boost energy and vitality.

The symbol of Kagoshima is the majestic Sakurajima, which looms behind the main streets. Sakurajima is an active volcano that still erupts on a small scale from time to time, and even during non-eruption periods, volcanic ash may fall. In addition, there are other active volcanoes such as Mount Kirishima, which straddles the border between Kagoshima and Miyazaki prefectures, and Kuchinoerabujima Island, which was formed by volcanic eruptions. The region has many “hot springs” born from its volcanoes, as well as local specialties like Sakurajima white radishes and Sakurajima small oranges grown using volcanic ash. The lives of Kagoshima residents are inseparable from these volcanoes.

You may choose to join optional shore excursions organized by the cruise line at your own expense.
