Kyoto’s Arashiyama Togetsukyo Bridge and Bamboo Grove Path are usually popular tourist destinations. But on a chilly winter night in December, this beloved spot transforms into a Lantern Road, where various illuminated displays and lighting effects immerse visitors in a breathtaking atmosphere not often seen in daily life.

The Arashiyama Lantern Road is broadly divided into two sections: the Bamboo Grove Path and Togetsukyo Bridge. The northern part, the Bamboo Grove Path, stretches from Nenbutsu Shrine all the way to Okochi-Sanso Villa. The bamboo groves on both sides of the path glow brilliantly under blue, purple, and yellow lights, with the tall bamboo stalks forming a tunnel that seems to lead visitors into another world.

Exiting the Bamboo Grove Path and continuing along the lantern route, you’ll pass by Ogurayama Pond and Jōjakkō-ji Temple. Along the trail, many traditional Japanese-style roji lanterns and a variety of flower arrangements are placed, adding a romantic touch.

As for the southern part, Togetsukyo Bridge is bathed in golden light, while the nearby mountains are illuminated in blue and purple, creating a fantastical yet majestic and beautiful scene against the night sky. Similarly, Nakajima Park also features numerous decorative lanterns and large flower arrangements, showcasing the rich diversity and elegance of ikebana (Japanese flower arranging).

The Lantern Road is illuminated from December 13 to 22, between 5:00 PM and 8:30 PM. Please note that the lights are turned off very punctually. If you’d like to leisurely stroll and take photos in Arashiyama, it’s recommended to set aside at least two and a half hours. You can also download the official map here.
