As 2019 comes to an end, many travelers are already planning their countdown events and holiday itineraries. Aside from watching fireworks and attending concerts, many also choose to chase the first rays of sunlight in 2020. Recently, the meteorological bureau has released data and times for the sunset on New Year’s Eve and the sunrise on New Year’s Day — don’t miss your chance to catch the first light.

The first light of 2020 will appear at Dongqing in Orchid Island at 6:08 AM; meanwhile, the sunrise on Taiwan’s main island can be seen at Sanxiantai in Taitung and Eluanbi in Pingtung, both locations offering the first glimpse of sunlight at 6:11 AM.

The meteorological bureau has also released the sunset time for 2019. At 5:25 PM, you can witness the latest sunset on Taiwan’s main island plains at Anping in Tainan and Qijin in Kaohsiung. Sunrise and sunset times may vary slightly due to weather conditions, so travelers hoping to catch these moments are advised to arrive early and prepare in advance.

Aside from the announced locations for the first sunrise, many travelers also head to iconic sunrise spots such as Alishan and Sun Moon Lake to capture the most beautiful views. This year, the Alishan Forest Railway’s Zhushan Sun Viewing Train has opened up pre-registration and advance ticket booking.
