As times have changed, traditional neighborhood general stores full of local charm have gradually become fewer and fewer. However, many have been renovated and transformed, emerging with unique features. This honesty shop located in Nantun District, Taichung, has become an ultra-popular IG check-in spot, preserving its nostalgic retro look that stirs fond memories.

The honesty shop was originally a traditional general store called “Rongli Store.” In 2004 (the 93rd year of the Republic of China), it was refurbished and reopened, transforming into a unique unstaffed shop. There are no shop assistants or surveillance cameras—just an honesty jar where customers deposit the amount they owe for the items they take. The collected money goes toward covering the shop’s rent and daily operations.
The original appearance of the old house has been preserved, surrounded by lush green potted plants that bring vitality and sunshine to the aged building.
Depositing the correct amount for what you take is a voluntary act that tests one’s honesty.
The shop is filled with handmade maple soap, crafts, drinks, free-range chicken tea eggs, and snacks made by local moms from the community. All items are clearly priced at affordable rates. The shop also offers a variety of nostalgic Taichung-exclusive treats made from “Ma Pu” (a local specialty), such as different kinds of snacks, jelly, and ice pops—must-try local specialties when visiting Taichung.
