Located in the Beitai Medical District of Xinyi, just a few streets are lined with restaurants. The area is bustling with hospitals, schools, residences, and office buildings, creating a rich food scene. And come mealtime, this street-corner dumpling spot is always packed with diners, so today I’m taking you, our readers, and our site editor to dig in together.

Tongke Dumpling House is located on Zhengjing Road in the Beitai Medical District.

Tongke Dumpling House sits right at the corner of an alley on Zhengjing Road. When I came to work in Xinyi, I dropped by here for a bite. Seeing the steady stream of people going in and out, I didn’t hesitate to step inside—after all, in Taiwan, following the crowd at a small eatery rarely leads you wrong.

The dumplings were mouthwatering the moment they arrived.

As the name suggests, this place specializes in dumplings. Options include pork and cabbage, pork and leek, pork and kimchi, and pork with yellow chives and shrimp. I went for the leek and cabbage ones. Though I later learned that kimchi might be their most famous, it didn’t stop me from loving their dumplings.

Incredible shredded pork fried rice with a slightly crispy edge.

Personally, I think they really put effort into the dumpling wrappers. The area with the filling has a thinner layer of dough, while the overlapping parts are thick enough. When you bite in, the broth bursts out, filling your mouth with the flavors of veggies and meat, followed by the chewy wrapper. The texture was surprisingly impressive.

The pressed tofu and marinated egg also had great textures, though the sauce was a bit ordinary.

I also ordered a plate of shredded pork fried rice. The moment it arrived, the aroma hit me. What I love most about this fried rice is the subtle smokiness from the egg, mixed with fluffy, separate grains of rice. It’s the definition of simple yet delicious—paired with some side dishes, it was incredibly satisfying.
