Known as Japan’s water city, Osaka has long had a development closely tied to its waterways. The names of various districts in Osaka used today are also closely related to water. The popular districts of Osaka that attract many visitors are mainly divided into northern and southern areas, mostly concentrated around the JR Loop Line and the Midosuji Subway Line. Both the north and south are graced by the flow of the Yodo River, Dojima River, and Dotonbori, with water bus routes available on these major waterways......allowing people to explore and get a full picture of Osaka from the waterways. Unfolding a map of Osaka’s urban area, its streets are laid out in a grid-like pattern, with well-planned roads. The most vibrant and bustling areas are segmented by several intersecting waterways, giving Osaka the distinctive charm of a water city as seen today.

With numerous rivers and canals, a notable feature of touring Osaka is the abundance of bridges spanning them. It is estimated that there are now over 400 bridges of all sizes in the urban area. These bridges come in various shapes—some hold historical significance, others embody artistic beauty, and many showcase innovative, modern designs. It is recommended to take a water bus to take in the views of Osaka’s most famous bridges and waterways.
This year’s “Water City Osaka 2009 (Aqua MetropolOsaka 2009)” event will be held from August 22 to October 12. The central area of Osaka, surrounded by rivers such as the Dotonbori River, Kizu River, and Dojima River, is a rare urban condition not commonly found in global cities. “Water City Osaka 2009” is a series of events themed around Osaka’s image as a water city.
The revitalization plan for Nakanoshima area was completed this year, coinciding with the 100th anniversary of the Yodo River improvements. At the Nakanoshima and Hachikenya-hama venues, there are participatory, waterside experience, and appreciation-based activities. In addition to many art-centered programs, there are also floating markets, water corridors, and other events and facilities that allow visitors to appreciate the charm of Osaka as a water city.
