"Little Venice" Escape: A Journey to Giethoorn, the Netherlands Where There Are No Roads, Only Boats

Located in the province of Overijssel, Giethoorn was established in 1230 by a group of fugitives from the Mediterranean region. The name "Giethoorn" dates back to the 18th century, when workers digging canals unearthed many goat horns underground. The village began to gain fame in 1958 after a Dutch filmmaker shot a movie there. With a total canal length of about 6 kilometers, there are no formal roads for cars, which must all be parked outside the village. Residents commute by boat, while visitors can explore this tranquil and picturesque town either by boat tour or on foot, admiring the 18th-century-style houses lining the canals.

Transportation
Giethoorn is about 120 kilometers from Amsterdam. Take a train to Steenwijk Station, then transfer to bus 70 or a treintaxi to reach the village.
