Taipei’s famous attraction, the “Taipei Bridge Motorcycle Waterfall,” made headlines again this past Sunday (September 29). The local Facebook group Gogoro Owner Club organized a “Flash Taipei Bridge” event where 1,572 electric motorcycles rode across Taipei Bridge together, creating the globally renowned spectacle of the “motorcycle waterfall” at the bridge’s exit.

The Flash Taipei Bridge event was first held in 2016, with only a little over a hundred electric motorcycles participating at the time. Nowadays, as electric motorcycles have become more widely accepted, the number of participants has surged dramatically this year, with the entire convoy taking 10 minutes to completely pass through Taipei Bridge. Since all the participating vehicles are electric motorcycles, even with a thousand bikes in motion, the scene remains remarkably quiet, completely overturning the common perception.

Motorcycles (referred to as motorbikes in Hong Kong) are the most numerous and commonly used mode of transportation in Taiwan, even giving rise to a unique motorcycle culture. In the 2018 National Geographic Travel Photo Contest, Hong Kong photographer M. Chak won an award with his piece “Motorcycle Waterfall.” Instagram’s official account (@instagram) has also shared works by Japanese photographer (@_deepsky), reflecting how this phenomenon has long been internationally renowned.

In fact, according to Taipei-based photographer Tsai Chih-Hsiung, he himself discovered this spot back in 2006, published his photographic works publicly, and even won an international photography award with one of them. He also mentioned that in 2011, a professional photographer from National Geographic also shot here.
