After the nighttime illumination at the 13-Level Site in New Taipei City received widespread acclaim, another popular photography destination in Keelung, the “Argonaut Shipyard,” has also been illuminated at night. From September 27 to November 8, as part of the “Keelung Tidal Art” event, step into three major exhibition venues — the Argonaut Shipyard, Zhengbin Fishing Port, and the plaza in front of the Keelung Cultural Center — to discover the artistic beauty of Keelung’s harbor.

The “2019 Keelung Tidal Art” event is themed “Flow,” inviting contemporary artists from Taiwan and around the world to co-create and exhibit works. The event uses art to animate space, time, and people — from the Spanish and Dutch during the age of maritime dominance to the fishermen who made their living at the port. For centuries, the convergence of people through Keelung has blended local culture, art, and the unique character of the harbor, creating a vibrant local arts and culture ecosystem.

Among them, the Argonaut Shipyard exhibition area is highly anticipated. In addition to being illuminated at night, this industrial heritage site from the Japanese colonial period takes on a spectacular, timeless grandeur. During the day, it showcases the beauty of a rainbow formed by the interplay of sunlight and water, bringing a fresh energy to the historic shipyard with its vibrant hues.

The “Rainbow” installation is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The appearance of the rainbow varies depending on monthly weather conditions and the angle of sunlight. On cloudy, rainy days, or when sunlight is insufficient, the rainbow may not be visible. However, you cannot enter the Argonaut Shipyard for the light show; the best photo spot is on Heping Bridge.

Another highlight of the exhibition is Zhengbin Fishing Port, where a colorful small fishing village has prepared a decommissioned ocean-going fishing boat. By the seaside, the boat has been transformed into an island-like storytelling structure. Here, visitors can experience, feel, and witness the convergence of historical events across different times and spaces. The surrounding fishing port also features a variety of artworks that use technology such as VR to create fantastical scenes, turning the area into a maritime art museum.
