For the Japanese, summer gorges are the perfect escape from the heat. The shade of trees blocks the fierce sunlight, while the murmuring streams bring cool breezes, truly dispelling the summer heat. Among them, Kikuchi Gorge in Kumamoto Prefecture is said by backpackers to rival Oirase Gorge in Aomori Prefecture, northeastern Japan. For photographers, it’s also a hidden gem for capturing morning light.

Kikuchi Gorge is located within a corner of Aso-Kuju National Park. Its water originates from groundwater beneath the outer rim of Mount Aso and is listed among Japan’s 100 Famous Waters. The gorge features walking trails, and even in the height of summer, the stream water remains around 13°C, offering a refreshing chill.

In the early morning, sunlight filters through the gaps in the leaves and into the gorge, creating rays of divine light amid the thin mist. However, according to photographers, if you want to capture the morning light, you’ll need to arrive at the parking lot near the gorge entrance around 5 a.m., then walk to your chosen spot to get ready. Although there are several shooting locations, some spots may have around 20 people photographing at the same time, and the optimal window for shooting lasts only about 10 to 20 minutes.

Aside from the morning light, Kikuchi Gorge also boasts several waterfalls worth photographing, including: Kagemi Falls, Reimei Falls, Momiji Shoal, Ryūen Falls, Tengu Falls, Yonjūsanman Falls, and the especially popular among photographers—Hirokawahara. By the way, the Japanese believe that waterfalls generate a large amount of negative ions, which are believed to have positive effects on health, so they love to stroll around waterfall areas.
