With the approaching birthday of the God of Agriculture, the Sanyi Cloud Fire Dragon Festival, one of the Twelve Major Hakka Festivals in Miaoli County, is set to take place from June 4 to 8. In 2015, the Sanyi Cloud Fire Dragon Festival was named “Straw Festival,” aiming to trace back to origins and revive the fine traditions of rice culture. The event combines temple fair traditions such as inviting the dragon, welcoming the dragon, and dotting the dragon’s eyes with ceremonies, along with events like the Drunken Dragon Creative Competition and the Sacred Dart Throwing Contest. The 2015 Cloud Fire Dragon Festival was held across Sanyi Township from June 4 to 8. Following tradition, the straw-woven Cloud Fire Dragon first underwent the rituals of inviting, welcoming, and dotting the eyes in front of Guan Sheng Temple on the 4th. Over the next two days, it paraded through the entire township, receiving incense offerings for blessings from locals. The climax came on the 6th and 7th, with activities at the Five Grains Temple in front of Tianhou Temple Plaza and the river-covered plaza, including rural regeneration promotions, Drunken Dragon DIY competitions, dart throwing contests, Cloud Fire Dragon sketching contests, Cloud Fire Dragon photo exhibitions, and on-site wood carving creations. On the evening of the 6th, a lively Cloud Fire Dragon evening party took place.

Hsu Man-hsien, Director of the Miaoli County Government Agriculture Department, explained that the Cloud Fire Dragon is crafted from straw — the waste material after rice harvest — making it a unique cultural product of the rice-growing region. As the dragon’s body is adorned with lit incense sticks, the nighttime dance leaves behind swirling smoke and flickering flames, hence the name “Cloud Fire Dragon.” This cultural event showcases the traditional face of Taiwan’s rice culture and pays beautiful tribute to farmers’ devout gratitude to the heavens.
