Embrace One of Hualien’s Top 10 Hidden Gems: Mugumugu Opens for Hiking

Known as one of Hualien’s top 10 hidden gems, the Mugumugu Scenic Area used to attract around 190,000 visitors every year. After a typhoon caused a major landslide on the primary access road, the area has remained closed. Recently, the Tongmen Tribe in Sioulin Township and the Hualien County Government made an announcement.The landslide section of the road to the Mugumugu Eco-Corridor (Provincial Highway 14B) has been reopened. However, those wishing to enter Mugumugu for hiking purposes must apply and proceed on foot; other vehicles without approved permission are not permitted to enter.

The Hualien County Government stated that the landslide section of the road to the Mugumugu Eco-Corridor (Provincial Highway 14B) is now open to traffic, but due to exposed bedrock and the impact of open-cut tunnel construction, there remain safety concerns about passage. Applicants are advised to assess whether entry is truly necessary.

Those applying to enter the Mugumugu Eco-Corridor for hiking must do so on foot. If entering for other legally permitted reasons, or for accessing other mountain-controlled areas that require passing through the Mugumugu Eco-Corridor, applicants must follow the “Regulations Governing the Entry and Exit of People into and out of Mountain-Controlled Areas in Taiwan.” Regarding vehicle access, aside from official and local resident needs, entry is mainly limited to hikers and their gear. Other vehicles not granted permission are not allowed to enter or exit.
