Travel Center / Comprehensive Report
But is there really a life-threatening risk in just eating a bowl of ramen? In Kyoto, there’s a ramen shop“Menbakada Ichidai”, where the signature dish is flaming ramen (scallion ramen). Before serving the ramen to customers, the staff pour burning scallion oil into the bowl, and then a fierce flame immediately shoots up from the bowl. Due to the danger involved, it’s mandatory to eat only at the counter, and no photos are allowed, you must not run away, nor touch the ramen bowl, and you have to wear a paper bib throughout the meal.
The flaming ramen is such a unique dish that it’s bound to attract customers wanting to take photos, but because the flames are extremely hazardous, the owner prohibits customers who order the flaming ramen from taking selfies. If you want to take photos or record video for memories, you can ask the staff to help. Customers just need to focus on experiencing the blazing flames. Also, customers sitting outside the counter area are allowed to take photos or videos—there are no restrictions in those areas.
To prevent injuries, the staff remind customers to tie back their bangs with a rubber band, never touch the ramen bowl during the whole process, and when the fiery flames shoot up from the bowl, do not scream or run away—this could not only scare others but also cause self-injury. The staff also reminds you to keep your body tilted slightly backward at all times.
