Yilan’s “Coolest-Looking Island in the World” Increases Daily Visitor Cap to 1,800

Guishan Island in Yilan, recognized by foreign media as one of the “12 Coolest-Looking Islands in the World,” has raised its daily visitor limit to 1,800 people starting July. However, applications for visiting the 401 Highland have been temporarily suspended due to safety concerns.

Guishan Island is open for visits from March to November each year. The Northeast Coast National Scenic Area Administration stated that the island, which sees an average of 130,000 to 140,000 visitors annually, originally allowed only 1,000 people per day across four trips. Due to continued high demand, and after assessing factors such as the island’s ecological carrying capacity and facility conditions, the daily visitor cap has been increased to 1,800 people.

According to regulations by the Northeast Coast National Scenic Area Administration, the daily visitor limit is 1,800 people from Monday to Thursday and Sunday, and 500 people on Wednesdays. Visitors must apply on the administration’s official website (https://kueishan.necoast-nsa.gov.tw/main.php?id=206&lan=c) 3 to 20 days prior to their planned visit.

In addition, due to recent incidents where boat operators refused to transport visitors to the 401 Highland, the area is temporarily closed for climbing applications in the interest of public rights and safety. It will be reconsidered for reopening after the hiking trail undergoes safety improvements and coordination with boat operators is completed.
