Cyclists, take note: Kaohsiung Light Rail to begin trial operation in August — bikes not allowed on board

The Kaohsiung Light Rail is set to begin its first phase of opening and trial operation in August, but cyclists hoping to bring their bikes on board may need to wait. Chen Chun-jung, deputy chief engineerChen Chun-jungsaid that bikes will not be permitted on the light rail during the trial period.

The section of the Kaohsiung Light Rail opening in August will run from C1 Lizihnei Station to C8 Kaohsiung Exhibition Center Station, spanning approximately 5 kilometers. Free rides for the public are expected to continue until mid-2016. Considering the large crowds during the trial period, Chen Chun-jung noted thatbikes will not be allowed on board during the trial operation; however, foldable bikes will be permitted once full service begins,though the relevant regulations are still under discussion with the Kaohsiung Department of Transportation.

The first phase of the Kaohsiung Circular Light Rail is expected to be fully operational by mid-2016. The nearly year-long trial operation starting in August will not only help the public familiarize themselves with how to ride the light rail but also allow drivers of cars and motorcycles to adjust to the changed traffic conditions after the rail line begins service.
