Scoot’s Boeing 787 “Dreamliner” – 5 Must-Sees & Magical Window Shades

Since February 2015, Scoot, a subsidiary of Singapore Airlines, has offered flights featuring the Boeing 787, known as the “Dreamliner.” The airline also announced a gradual phase-out of its 777 aircraft, becoming one of the few low-cost carriers to operate the 787 — exciting news for aviation enthusiasts. On July 8, Scoot launched the “Singapore–Kaohsiung–Osaka” route using the Boeing 787-9, offering a more comfortable option even on budget flights. During my trip to Singapore, I had the chance to experience this new aircraft, and here's my review.

“Welcome aboard your Scoot flight to Singapore — get ready to experience just how cool we really are.”From the aircraft livery and cabin crew uniforms to the captain’s announcements, the much-emphasized “Scootitude” spirit is evident everywhere. The Scoot cabin crew always seem more energetic and lively than those on most other airlines, which is part of the youthful vibe Scoot cultivates onboard. From my observations, they even casually crack jokes while serving passengers, often getting everyone laughing.

Overall, the Scoot 787-9 offers 35 business class seats (ScootBiz) and 340 economy class seats (Economy). Business class seat pitch is 97 cm (same as the original 777), with leg rests and power outlets available for free, as well as complimentary meals, iPads for entertainment, and 20 kg checked baggage allowance. Economy class seat pitch ranges from 79 to 89 cm (also same as the original 777), with yellow-patterned seats offering extra legroom — but these require a paid upgrade. Power outlets come at an additional charge of 5 Singapore dollars.

In short, the Scoot Boeing 787 features electronic controls and a design that's notably different from traditional planes. There are several refreshing elements during the flight, such as oversized windows, magical 7-color LED mood lighting, seat power outlets, and great photo opportunities — especially the generous seat space, which surprises many frequent budget travelers. A business director noted, “First-time Scoot passengers are often won over by the spacious, comfy seats and end up flying with us regularly.”

1. Big Windows for Stargazing

If you enjoy gazing out the window at the scenery 30,000 feet above, the 787 will offer you a whole new experience. One of Boeing’s design highlights for the 787 is its larger windows — their height has increased by up to one-third, allowing you to even see the stars on a clear day.2. “Magical” LCD Window Shades

In the past, flight attendants would remind passengers one-by-one to close their window shades during takeoff and landing. But the 787 features an amazing innovation: electronic window shades, dubbed the “magical window shades,” which can be controlled centrally. I wasn’t able to witness the magic firsthand on my 20:05 flight, but when we landed at Changi Airport, I quickly used the runway lights to test the feature. Using liquid crystal technology, these shades offer five adjustable levels of tint — simply pull the tab. Even at near-full darkness (99.9%), you can still clearly see outside during daylight.

3. Spin, Spin, Spin — 7-Color Neon Cabin Lights

The neon lights on the 787 aren’t for karaoke-style party vibes — they’re actually a tool to set various moods throughout the cabin, making your flight more pleasant. While typical cabins use white and yellow lighting, the 787 incorporates LEDs with a range of colors, creating different atmospheres — warm lighting for meals or sleep-inducing blue for red-eye flights.
4. More Spacious Overhead Bins — Cabin Crew Love Them Too




The overhead storage bins above your seat are designed for carry-on luggage and suitcases. The 787-9 redesign increases bin capacity — you can fit three 20-inch suitcases plus several standard carry-on bags.
