Tokyo’s Tsukiji Market is history — moving and renaming to “Toyosu Market” in November next year

Tsukiji Market, a must-visit destination in Tokyo, will close at the end of 2016. The Tokyo Metropolitan Government announced,Tsukiji Market will move to Koto Ward next November and be renamed “Toyosu Market.”

According to Japanese media reports, after consultations between the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and Tsukiji Market stakeholders, it was decided that the relocation to the site of the new “Toyosu Market” would take place from November 3 to 6, 2016, with official operations beginning on November 7. This also marks the end of an 81-year history for Tsukiji Market, which opened in 1935.

In addition to fruit and vegetable vendors, popular shops among foreign tourists such as “Sushi Dai” will also relocate to Toyosu Market. The nearest station to the new location is Toyosu Station on the Tokyo Waterfront Area Rapid Transit (Yurikamome) Line.
