Too many visitors affecting cleanliness！Mugumuyu to limit daily entries to 600 from August

Mugumuyu is a popular attraction in eastern Taiwan, drawing both domestic and international tourists. It reopened on June 6 this year, allowing visitors to access the area on foot. However, during the peak summer travel season with no visitor control in place, the daily number of visitors exceeded 1,000. The Tongmen Tribe, which is part of the area, believes that the high volume of tourists still impacts environmental cleanliness and water sources. As a result, the Hsiulin Township Office has decided to impose a daily entry cap of 600 people starting August 1.

Last July, Mugumuyu was closed due to typhoon damage, and it only reopened on June 6. According to reports, police statistics show that nearly 20,000 people have applied to enter the area since it reopened, averaging around 500 per day. During the summer peak or holidays, it’s common to see over 1,000 visitors at a time. In addition to reinstating the daily entry limit of 600 people (300 in the morning and 300 in the afternoon), the Hsiulin Township Office will hire more cleaning staff to improve environmental upkeep and will also work with inspection teams to crack down on littering. The new system officially takes effect on August 1.
