Taichung“Taiwan’s Coolest Hotel”Red Dot Cultural & Tourism has celebrated its first anniversary. The 27-meter-long metal stainless steel slide installed in the lobby, surrounded by red brick walls and reproduction tiles from Sanhe Brick Kiln, has attracted numerous hotel enthusiasts to make a pilgrimage here. Beyond offering a unique stay,some guests even call the breakfast here “the most worthwhile breakfast experience on Earth.”

Purchasing the Galaxy Hotel, which opened in 1979, Red Dot Cultural & Tourism is located in central Taichung. This self-proclaimed “coolest” hotel has already captured attention with its innovative 360-degree slide that winds from the second floor down to the first, set within a grand public space. Paired with the vintage vibe around the lobby, it creates a novel feeling that is both avant-garde and retro.

Defining the hotel’s style as local and cultural-creative, unlike typical design hotels that use retro methods to evoke a sense of history, Red Dot draws inspiration from the collective memories of the 1970s. Yet, no matter how beautiful the hotel lobby is, everything ultimately comes back to “sleeping”—a simple yet significant experience. The rooms at Red Dot Cultural & Tourism present a stark contrast to the lobby, featuring minimalist designs with just a large bed, where Taiwanese floral fabric adds a splash of color to the headboard, and the room’s furniture and decor adopt a minimalist Nordic style.

The aspect of a hotel stay that tends to stick most in guests’ memories is breakfast. Red Dot Cultural & Tourism’s semi-buffet-style breakfast is hugely popular with guests, featuring seasonal rotating dishes. Guests can choose their main dish from several menu options,with the 2015 summer new menu including items such as “Mango Sweet,” “Loofah Shrimp,” and “Chicken Leg Roast.”These are expected to once again become reasons that attract guests to stay.

Upholding the concept of seasonal fruit for breakfast, this time the star is the king of summer fruits: mango. “Mango Sweet,” adorned with fresh cream and lemon zest, offers a mildly tangy and sweet flavor, paired with soft Danish toast for a refreshing start to the day. “Loofah Shrimp” continues Red Dot Cultural & Tourism’s tradition of serving egg dishes since opening. As summer is the peak season for loofah, it helps clear heat and reduce internal fire, while being paired with highly nutritious sakura shrimp and bread to add satiety. “Chicken Leg Roast” is a favorite among breakfast meat lovers—chicken leg meat seasoned with a secret marinade, roasted, and served in slider bread.
