Flight delays, long security lines — America’s 6 most poorly rated airports

Experts say it’s basically impossible to identify the “worst” airport, as different travelers have different priorities and standards. But airports with poor reputations do share some common traits. USAToday has compiledAmerica’s six most poorly rated airports, which can be valuable information for frequent travelers (or those passing through) the U.S., especially business travelers — after all, many issues involve flight delays, and that’s a big deal.

1. Newark Liberty International Airport
It’s the most delay-prone airport in the U.S. According to 2014 federal data: one in every three flights is late, earning it the reputation of having a “schedule as unpredictable as the weather.” While its facilities have gradually improved, many passengers still say the airport lacks overall aesthetic appeal.

2. Philadelphia International Airport
PHL often experiences delays due to weather and heavy air traffic, and some passengers have noted that terminals are quite far apart.

3. Los Angeles International Airport
Passenger opinions about this airport vary depending on which terminal they use, as some are modern and newly built, while others are still awaiting renovation. However, the main issue is the need for improvement in the ground transportation system.

4. Washington Dulles International Airport
Many boarding gates are temporary and not yet permanently installed. Security lines are often very long during peak hours. The airport is about 50 kilometers from downtown D.C., and even if you take the metro, you’ll still need to transfer to a bus. Driving or taking a taxi is another option, but taxis are completely monopolized.

5. Miami International Airport
Due to poor corridor design, security, customs, and check-in lines quickly get congested during peak times. Other issues include terminals being far from train stations and car rental locations.

6. Chicago O'Hare International Airport
Although flight delay problems have significantly improved, for many travelers the airport remains synonymous with delays. During winter snowstorms, the airport often faces severe traffic congestion. Other issues include long distances between gates and terminals, as well as routinely long lines at security and check-in.
