On the bustling Wenlin Road in Zhantan, a second-floor restaurant called “Jungle city cafe bar” stands out. At first glance, is it a restaurant? A nightclub? A clothing store? It’s not clear what’s going on, but it still draws curious crowds up the stairs.

A row of national flags and abundant greenery decorate the space, along with warm lighting and upbeat music, evoking the feeling of dining in a tropical jungle. Take a closer look and you’ll see gorillas and rhinos painted on the walls—the decor aligns with the restaurant’s name, “Jungle city,” making you feel like you’ve stepped into the Amazon rainforest for a meal.

This unique décor isn’t just for show—owner Adam is actually a foreigner. To be precise, he’s an Israeli born in California, USA. Now 33, he has traveled across Europe, Australia, and Japan, and eventually chose to settle here, bringing together the culinary essence he learned during his global journeys.
For the menu, Adam hopes to showcase a variety of international cuisines to the Taiwanese public. From Mexican tapas and Brazilian fruit bowls to European cheese platters and American-style cheeseburgers, there’s something for everyone. For dessert, they’ve also added American-sized cheesecakes—all prepared by a Mexican chef.

Given the high number of young people in the area, the restaurant targets the student demographic. Students can show their ID and enjoy the Jungle Big Burger—originally priced at NT$280—for just NT$150, plus half-price drinks, making it appealing for those on a budget.

Adam admits that many customers come up, see he’s a foreigner, and get nervous, choosing to leave. He understands that Taiwanese people tend to be shy and hesitant to speak English, so he’s placed a bilingual Chinese-English menu on the first floor to avoid confusion.

Adam says that to make better use of the space, the upstairs will be rented out to yoga instructors for classes. There are also live music nights every Thursday and Friday, and DJ parties on Saturdays—great opportunities to chat with foreigners, practice English, and make new friends.
