Sleep for just 600 NT a night at Tainan’s new youth hostel—Nordic country style on Hai’an Road

A new youth hostel has opened on Tainan’s Hai’an Road. It offers a spacious lobby space, retaining a “revitalized old building” décor style,with Nordic furniture that blends industrial and American country styles, and each bunk bed costs only 600 NT.Even during its trial operation period, occupancy has already reached 70%. Its refreshing style makes it a rare accommodation piece in Tainan.

Centered around the concept of “revitalized old buildings,” it doesn’t excessively damage the exterior structure, preserves parts of the previous memories, and infuses youthful vitality throughout. Cheng Yi Light Travel combines hotel management experience, with 21 standard rooms and 40 bunk beds in group rooms at its Tainan branch. Independent standard rooms start from 1700 NT per night, while individual bunks cost as low as 600 NT per person per night.

There are dormitory rooms for 2, 4, 6, and 8 people with bunk beds. Stepping into the lobby, you’re greeted by a transparent glass map wall, where sticker labels allow guests to share their experiences of attractions. Breaking away from the grand lobbies and stone counters commonly found in accommodations, this space uses a reworked trailer-style wooden table, which is simple yet seamlessly blends into the industrial exposed-style of the lobby.

Compared to the Chiayi branch that opened in spring, the Tainan branch of the Light Travel series offers more spacious space, with its lobby and self-service kitchen designed to accommodate even more guests. Though located near the lively Hai’an Road, it still offers a sense of an independent retreat. Although it’s primarily aimed at those looking to make friends, it also provides enough space and privacy for guests who want a quieter rest area.

In terms of the stay experience, the 2-person rooms in the Tainan branch feature king-size beds, with basic amenities plus a floor lamp. The backpacker rooms each have curtains, individual lamps, and power outlets—simple yet very thoughtful designs.

Cheng Yi Cultural Travel brand director Ling Pei-yi mentioned that backpackers not only have a strong desire for travel autonomy but also dislike being restricted by check-in and check-out times. Therefore, a “Night Owl Zone” has been set up. Travelers with late arrival needs can apply to use it. By receiving a door access code via SMS, and finding their name in the Night Owl Zone, they can follow mysterious prompts to retrieve their room key. They can easily check in without the assistance of a front desk attendant.
