A petite, artsy Kyoto café with homely flavors in the weekly set meal

I can’t remember where I found this café, but I think I saw it on Tabelog again. It was raining quite heavily in Kyoto that day, and I took a bus from my hotel near Shijō-Ōmiya to the unfamiliar Nishioji Street, umbrella in hand. Despite the rain, my mood remained cheerful—I had a feeling this place would rank among my top favorite cafés.
I always make it a point to come right when the shop opens so I can choose my favorite seat and take photos without disturbing other customers. As expected, we were the first guests to arrive. The atmosphere inside was exactly my style. The owner is a graceful young woman who seemed to be running the place solo. With her permission, I quickly snapped some photos before other customers showed up.
I ordered the weekly set meal (800 yen / includes a rich salad, drink, and cake combo).

Every small dish was delicious, with a home-cooked flavor and plenty of vegetables—very healthy.

The fresh cheese cake had a soft, smooth texture, though I personally prefer the denser taste of a matured cheesecake.
I remember that day, the café was playing a song by Woolly and the Flower. Little did I know, I’d later hear on the news that the lead singer, Hana, had passed away—it’s truly a reminder of how unpredictable life is. While I was there, a mother and daughter sat at the table next to me. The adorable little girl played with the toys on the table while eating, and her cuteness made me keep stealing glances. I usually take photos at every café I visit and upload them to Instagram, which unexpectedly led me to find the account of the mom who brought her cute daughter out for a meal.
I loved the atmosphere at Mugicha Café so much that I quietly stayed there for nearly two hours from opening before leaving. Just before I left, I saw another customer order curry rice—it looked pretty good too, so I’ll have to come back next time.
