An elegant French afternoon tea date in Yuanlin City — don't miss their handmade classic soufflé!

Just looking at this cake display, you’d think I was at some popular queue-worthy French patisserie in Taipei!

And then, seeing the exterior of this shop, you might think I was at a high-end French restaurant in Taipei’s 7th Redevelopment Zone!

Wrong on both counts — this is actually a specialty French dessert shop located right here in Yuanlin. Yuanlin is an incredible city — such a small place yet filled with amazing people. In the past, my friends could only have street snacks when they came here; now, I’m dying to bring my girlfriends for a French-style afternoon tea. Fleur d’Ourson has been a new oasis I’ve discovered in the past two years, and their lemon tart is one of my favorite desserts. When work stress gets too much, it's my go-to stress reliever. The lemon tart from Fleur d’Ourson has a crispy crust, with just the right balance of sweet and sour. The lemon zest on top completes the soul of the tart.

When I used to work in Taipei, every time I dined at a French restaurant, my dessert would always be a soufflé. A perfectly puffed soufflé that comes to the table needs to be eaten hot — first take a bite of the warm cake. Then, the second bite, drizzle with raspberry jam for a tangy twist. Finally, pair it with a scoop of sorbet — the contrast of hot and cold is absolutely divine. When eating a soufflé, remember to focus and eat it while it’s hot. No distractions.

I forgot the name of this chocolate dessert, but it’s the kind of chocolate cake that caters to adult palates, with a very layered texture.

An afternoon tea set is a proper afternoon tea set — ordering a standalone soufflé or strawberry mille-feuille gives better value for money.

The dining environment at Fleur d’Ourson is really comfortable — a cozy space that’s hard to come by even in Taipei. That Yuanlin can host such a high-quality French patisserie means it not only has a great clientele, but the owner must be a master of their craft!
