The container concept store of Starbucks in South Seattle, USA, is very different from other Starbucks locations housed in concrete buildings. Using shipping containers as the main visual and decorative elements gives these originally large and heavy containers a new aesthetic and vitality, while also successfully conveying an environmentally friendly message.

This container-style Starbucks in Tukwila, South Seattle, focuses on environmental sustainability. It was created by repurposing four old shipping containers—originally used to transport tea and coffee for over 20 years—that were stacked together. Illustrations and lighting were used to design an aesthetically pleasing exterior and interior, resulting in a “drive-thru Starbucks” with a dedicated lane. This transformation gives the containers a new lease on life and makes it the first LEED-certified green building in the Tukwila area.
