Japan’s Hottest Trend: Healing Alternative Animal Cafés

When it comes to animal-themed cafés, most are centered around dogs or cats. In Taiwan, there are also many pet-friendly animal cafés where you can spend an entire afternoon up close with adorable creatures. However, Japan has been embracing alternative animal cafés,Ettoday Eastland Travel Cloud has compiled three unique types of animal cafés—come see just how cute they are!

1. Owl Café
In recent years, owl cafés have become extremely popular in Japan. Several owl cafés in Tokyo are highly sought after and only accept advance reservations, so be sure to book ahead before visiting. The cute owls—with their fluffy bodies and big round black eyes—are incredibly photogenic and their adorable charm melts customers’ hearts.

Many owl-themed animal cafés have opened across Japan, where you can interact with these lovable owls in what feels like a mini zoo. Each café has its own features and rules; some allow you to play with the owls while sipping coffee, while others prohibit touching unless you’ve undergone proper sanitation procedures first.

2. Capybara Café
The chubby and docile capybara looks silly and adorable, making it a favorite “naturally clueless healing animal” for many. At Space World theme park in Kitakyushu City, Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan’s first-ever “capybara café for visitors” was introduced. For just 500 yen (approximately NT$130), guests can get up close and personal with seven adorable capybaras and even feed them by hand.

The venue also offers 27 types of soft drinks for unlimited consumption and features an indoor dining area where visitors can relax with coffee while enjoying the sight of capybaras leisurely soaking in outdoor hot springs—it’s truly a delightful experience.

3. Penguin Bar

Visiting a bar isn’t just about drinking or dancing anymore. One unique bar in Tokyo takes a different approach: aside from the usual alcohol and food offerings found in typical bars, this place keeps a group of super cute penguins. Customers can get an up-close view of the penguins’ adorable antics—super therapeutic.

Located in the bustling Ikebukuro district of Toshima Ward, the shop owners believe that the fast-paced urban life brings a lot of stress, so they introduced a group of little penguins in hopes that their ultra-cute healing powers can help customers unwind.
