I’ve always thought that traveling solo is a really cool thing to do. It’s also on my list of must-do experiences in life—a chance to spend time with myself. But when it comes to choosing a destination, I often draw a blank. So I did some research on solo travel to share as a reference for everyone.

First and foremost, safety is a key consideration. When you’re abroad, you need to be cautious about everything, especially without family or friends around—you have to look out for yourself. Therefore, the destination shouldn’t be too dangerous or underdeveloped, particularly for women or anyone considering solo travel.

The second factor is language. You can’t be completely unable to communicate, but if the language is too familiar, it might take away the sense of curiosity and exploration that comes with the unknown. Ideally, the destination should be in a society where the native language isn’t yours, but you can still get by with your second language, such as countries/cities where English is widely spoken as a second language.

The third factor is how suitable the place is for solo travel. Some cities and activities are better suited for group trips with close friends—like Phuket or Sabah, which are full of sunshine and beaches. Traveling alone there might feel a bit lonely, and overly tourism-driven cities may only offer a superficial experience, preventing you from truly understanding the local society and culture. That’s why they’re not on my list. The top choices are non-touristy cities—in short, the more mundane a city usually feels, the better it is for solo travel. Solo travel deserves a solo-worthy destination.

Safe Choices: Japan / Singapore

Under Singapore’s strict governance, the crime rate is low and public safety is excellent. There’s no need to worry about safety here, though the only downside is that Singapore isn’t much different from our home cities, lacking that sense of exploration. Japan, on the other hand, is quite interesting. Most people have been there before, and even if you don’t speak the language, communication isn’t entirely impossible. For women traveling abroad for the first time and who have never been to Japan, Singapore is recommended. Otherwise, Japan might be the better option.

Long-Haul Options: Germany / Australia

Germans are known for their precision and diligence, while Australians are famous for their optimism and positivity. If you want to explore Western culture in relatively safe countries, both are great choices.

Hidden Gems: Laos / Sri Lanka

Laos—yes, you might have heard of it, but perhaps never knew exactly where it is. In fact, it’s right nearby, bordered by Thailand, Myanmar, and Cambodia. It’s a Southeast Asian country, almost like a forgotten hub, or that classmate you know exists but never really got to know. It’s a destination for advanced backpackers. What do you know about Sri Lanka? Nothing beyond tea? Did you know it’s called the “Tear of the Indian Ocean”? If you know nothing about this beautiful country, it’s time to lift the veil of mystery.
