Surging Passenger Numbers: Can’t Wait for Terminal 3, Taoyuan Airport to Build Terminal 4 First

Taoyuan Airport is overwhelmed with passengers. Passenger volume is expected to exceed 40 million in 2015, but Terminal 3 won’t be completed until 2020. Unable to wait for Terminal 3, the airport company will construct a smaller Terminal 4 at Terminal 1 to handle passenger traffic, with completion and launch scheduled for 2018.

In recent years, tourist arrivals to Taiwan have grown substantially. Coupled with many countries gradually implementing visa-free policies for Taiwanese visitors, more locals are also keen on traveling abroad, leading to increased inbound and outbound passenger numbers. Currently, the annual passenger capacity of Taoyuan Airport’s Terminal 1 and 2 is about 32 million, but last year’s passenger volume already exceeded 35 million, and is expected to surpass 40 million next year. Many passengers find the airport crowded.

Taoyuan Airport Corporation estimates that the airport’s passenger capacity grows by around 10% annually, and by 2020, it is projected to reach 50 million passengers. Therefore, expansion and new terminal construction are imperative. Terminal 3, which will have an annual passenger capacity of 45 million, is not due for completion until 2020.As a result, a Terminal 4 (referred to by the airport company as the Smart Terminal) will first be built at the No. 1 Departure Parking Area of Terminal 1. It will have an annual passenger capacity of 5 million, featuring a self-service check-in system and full computerization, significantly reducing manpower and cutting down passenger waiting times. Completion and launch are expected in 2018.
