Keelung Zhongshan Overpass to Be Demolished – Don’t Miss Your Chance to Visit This Film Location from a Shu Qi Movie

The "Zhongshan Overpass," also known as Takasago Bridge, is located in Keelung City on Zhongshan 1st Road, near Keelung Railway Station (New Station). Completed in 1976, it is set to be demolished before next year’s Lunar New Year. Once famous for scenes shot here by director Hou Hsiao-hsien, this location has now become a must-visit spot for netizens eager to pay their respects before it's gone.

The Zhongshan Overpass connects Zhong 2nd Road and An 1st Road, while also linking residents separated by the train tracks. In 2013, a collapse of the overpass injured a woman, and subsequent repairs connected the old and new sections, resulting in the long structure seen today. However, this year, the Keelung City Government announced that pedestrians can walk from the staircase at the An 1st Road entrance directly to the South Station of the railway station. As a result, the Zhongshan Overpass will be demolished before next year’s Lunar New Year.

Films directed by Chang Tso-chi, such as "The Best of Times," and "Millennium Mambo," which won the Technical Grand Prize at the 2001 Cannes Film Festival, were both shot on this bridge. In "Millennium Mambo," Shu Qi is seen strolling lazily across the bridge, frequently glancing back while smoking pensively, portraying her resolve to break free from a destructive relationship. The release of the film drew many fans to visit the location. Earlier this year, in late February, Korean actor Hwang Jung-min, known for his role in "The Battleship Island," also filmed scenes for his new Korean movie "Work" here.

The marks of time, paired with the illuminated corridor lights at night, make "retro" a defining feature of this bridge. Its narrow, elongated walkway adds to the dreamy atmosphere. Having grown up alongside many Keelung residents, the Zhongshan Overpass will now fade into history due to aging infrastructure and urban redevelopment plans. This classic overpass will only live on in films and memories. Those wishing to witness its charm should seize the opportunity to visit, but be mindful of construction work in the area and stay safe.
