Tofu pudding, pork chop buns, and roast meat rice — the top three favorite Macanese dishes among Taiwanese travelers

A food search website, OpenRice Taiwan (開飯喇), surveyed Taiwanese people on their favorite Macanese dishes while traveling in Macau. The most recommended was Li Hong Kee’s tofu pudding, followed by the pork chop bun from Qingzhou Zaoji Ice Room, the roast meat rice from Fen Kee Roast Meat, the potstickers from Little Shanghai, and the egg sandwich from Nanping Yaxu. These five establishments share one thing in common — they are all long-standing shops tucked away in narrow alleys, yet even locals in Macau are willing to line up for them.

Tofu pudding is a common snack in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau. Li Hong Kee’s tofu pudding has been in business in Macau for over 60 years. Its tofu pudding is hailed by netizens as being even softer and smoother than a baby’s skin, and even food critic Chua Lam has given it praise. As for Macanese pork chop buns, they are a must-try dish for travelers. Qingzhou Zaoji Ice Room is an old shop with over 50 years of history. Its signature pork chop bun is crispy both inside and out, with only the middle part being slightly soft. The pork chop is well-marinated and delicious. Fen Kee Roast Meat is a takeout-only small shop that’s only open for two hours a day and is closed on holidays, yet there’s always a long queue at its door.

The potstickers at Little Shanghai are generously filled with juicy meat, and each one is pan-fried until the bottom turns golden and crispy. They’re delicious without needing any additional sauce. The most famous item at Nanping Yaxu is the egg sandwich. Here, the “egg” is pan-fried by the shop owners using fragrant peanut oil — it’s aromatic, smooth, and generous in portion.
